Holiday Hustle: Staying Healthy During the Holiday Season

Whether it’s traveling, figuring out a shopping budget, planning big meals, or keeping the peace at family gatherings, the holiday hustle can be exhausting.

Here are a few ways to stay merry and bright throughout the holiday season.

Don’t Skip on Exercise

Many people tend to hit pause on the gym come Thanksgiving and vow to start exercising again after New Year’s. This is a mistake.

Making time for regular exercise (at least 2-3 days a week) will help you stay healthy during the holidays in a number of ways.

  • Reduces stress
  • Provides an energy boost
  • Strengthens your immune system
  • Can prevent weight gain

Nobody wants to end the year sick, tired, and feeling like they put on unwanted weight, so get in some cardio!

Travel Smart

Travel during the holidays can be especially tiring, and with so many people passing through airports and roadside travel centers, it’s especially easy to pick up a bug.

A key tip to avoid getting sick is to follow the advice of your kindergarten teacher and wash your hands. Always wash them after using a public restroom, preparing to eat a meal, or after passing through a baggage checkpoint. (Keeping hand sanitizer on you isn’t a bad idea either.)

If you have a compromised immune system or are getting over an illness, masking up when passing through airports, subways, or crowded areas is also a good precaution.

Hydration is Key

Speaking of travel, flying naturally dehydrates the body, so make a point to drink lots of water. Even if you’re not traveling for the holidays, drinking plenty of water is still good. People tend to eat more sugar and salt during the holiday season, and drinking water will help to keep your body hydrated.

It’s also wise to drink at least one glass of water for every alcoholic beverage you have. This will go a long way in preventing that dreaded holiday office party hangover.

Healthy Eating

Perhaps no other time of year is full of mouthwatering treats and recipes than the holiday season. It’s no secret that many holiday dishes are full of calories, and those calories can quickly add up.

You don’t need to forgo pie and stuffing completely, but simple holiday healthy eating tips like doubling up on veggies, skipping seconds, and not shopping on an empty stomach can go a long way in keeping extra weight off.

And if you’re in charge of the cooking, opting for healthier versions of holiday dishes will help balance out the extra plate of cookies.

Manage Holiday Stress

The holidays can be stressful even for those who seemingly have nerves of steel. Recognizing what causes that holiday stress is the key to managing it. If you feel like you “have to do everything,” then taking on less and saying “no” more often can take extra pressure off your plate.

If relatives are a source of stress, then it’s important to set boundaries. As the saying goes, “You can’t change how others act, but you can determine how you respond.”

The holidays are a wonderful time and enjoying them in a home you love makes the festivities even more special. If you’re looking for your dream home, contact our team to learn more about the master-planned Crosswinds community.

Pet Pals: Teaching Kids Pet Responsibility

The old saying that a dog is man’s best friend rings true for children as well. In fact, you could probably apply it to cats, parakeets, hamsters, and maybe even a frog. A pet can bring joy to a child that rivals even the most sought-after toy, and pet ownership can be a wonderful way to teach children responsibility and empathy.

Before you head out to find your child’s new best friend, here are a few things to keep in mind.

Start in Summer

There’s really no wrong time of year to get a pet, but summer does have an advantage when it comes to helping children learn to care for their pets. Because children are out of school for the summer, they’ll have more free time to develop good habits of pet responsibility habits, such as cleaning up and feeding pets.

Pet tip* Entering into a new home only to have its owners leave can create separation anxiety for pets. If your family has a vacation on the calendar, consider waiting until after you’ve returned before getting a new furry friend.

Pick the Right Pet

Allowing your child to choose their own pet gives them a sense of power, but it’s important that

parents use good judgment based on the type of pet and the child’s age. A 4-year-old child may love the idea of getting a golden retriever, but they won’t be able to handle that level of responsibility. Something along the lines of a gerbil or goldfish may be a better fit.

Whichever pet wins out, your child must understand the new pet is not a toy. A daily pet responsibility schedule should be addressed before the pet is brought home. Your child needs to understand that just because they’re tired or not in the mood, their pet can’t be ignored but needs to be loved and cared for.

Daily Duties

Unless you’ve opted for a pet rock, your pet is going to have some daily needs that will need to be addressed. Whether your family chooses a dog, a cat, or another type of pet, be sure to assign your child responsibilities suitable for their age.

Young children will love scooping dog food into their pet’s bowl or sprinkling fish food in the water, but they shouldn’t be allowed to clean the cat’s litter box. Small children are constantly putting their fingers inside their mouths and rubbing their eyes, so save that job for older kids.

Older children will be able to handle more pet responsibilities, such as taking the dog for a walk, but even then, parents should use their best judgment. Some dogs can pull on a limb with incredible force, so it’s crucial that parents make sure the type of dog they get is a good match with their child.

One of the things that makes the master-planned Crosswinds community so appealing to pet owners is the amenities available. In addition to the dog park, the community has an expansive trail system that weaves through the community and is perfect for walks with a four-legged friend. To learn more, contact us today.

Packing Tips and Must-Have Items for Your Summer Trip

Is there really any vacation that embodies the summer experience more than a trip to the beach? Families have been loading up their cars, spreading out on the sand, and soaking up the sunshine amid dashes into the water for generations.

While there’s not a lot of complexity to enjoying a few days at the beach, a little bit of planning can go a long way.

Sun Protection Essentials

No matter what beach you visit, packing the right sun protection is key – especially if you have young children in tow. Don’t head to the beach without these essentials.

  • Waterproof sunscreen (dermatologists recommend SPF 40 or higher for kids)\
  • Sunglasses
  • Hats
  • UV shirts or UV suits
  • Lip balm with sunscreen
  • Sunburn relief cream

When it comes to applying sunscreen, it’s good to apply it at least 10 minutes before heading outside and reapply every two hours, especially if your child is doing a lot of swimming. Pay special attention when applying sunblock to areas more prone to sunburn, like the shoulders, back, nose, neck, and ears.

Keep Cool

Small children can’t stay out in the sun as long as adults, and providing some relief from the sun’s rays will help to keep everyone more comfortable. Consider bringing a beach canopy that you can set up or renting an umbrella if you’re at a beach that provides them.

Be sure to also bring along plenty of snacks and drinks to keep everyone happy. Soda or sugary drinks may be popular, but water is your best bet when it comes to preventing dehydration.

Fun in the Sun

It’s easy to have a good time simply splashing in the surf, but beach toys will take the fun to a whole other level. Just don’t make the mistake of taking more toys than you can carry. A good rule of thumb for the kiddos is to remind them that if they want to play with it, then they can help carry it.

A few classic toys to consider bringing:

  • Sandcastle buckets and shovels
  • Frisbee
  • Kite
  • Skimboard
  • Water guns
  • Floats
  • A mask, snorkel, and flippers

If your beach crew is all about some friendly competition, beach games like volleyball, tidal-ball, spike ball, or a portable cornhole set can provide plenty of fun.

Keep Things Easy

A relaxing day at the beach should be a simple affair, but that doesn’t mean that items of convenience should be ignored. One of the great things about stopping at those giant beach stores every touristy beach town has is that they’re full of items you don’t think you need until you need them.

These items may not be essentials, but they’re nice to have:

  • Cooler bags
  • Mesh or waterproof bags
  • Sunglass straps
  • Aloe vera gel
  • Sand remover wipes
  • Insulated water bottles
  • Bug repellant
  • Trash bags
  • Rash guards
  • Beach chairs

The awesome thing about Kyle is that it’s only about 3 and a half hours to Gavelston, and if you’re simply looking for a beach day at the lake, well, that’s only a 10-minute car ride away. Kyle’s easy access to so much that Texas has to offer is one of the things that makes it such a wonderful place to live.

Until you can get to the beach, you could enjoy a stay at home Sunday at Windy Point Amenity Center, which features a large pool with beach access, shade structures, and a spray park! If you’re looking for a home here, reach out to the Crosswinds team to learn more about this master-planned community.

Navigating the Neighborhood

Maybe we’re a bit biased, but we strongly believe that Kyle, specifically the Crosswinds community, is the best place to call home in the Texas Hill Country. The city offers convenience to larger metros such as Austin and San Antonio but has a vibrant character all its own. It’s big enough that there’s always something going on, yet small enough that it isn’t tangled up in the hustle and bustle of a big city.

If you’re new to the neighborhood, here are a few things to know for navigating your new home turf.

Amenities Overview

The Crosswinds master-planned community was designed to offer residents not only exceptional homes but resort-style amenities that appeal to every lifestyle.

Residents can soak up the sun and cool off poolside during the summer months, burn off some energy on the pickleball court, or gather for a cookout at one of the grill/picnic areas. There’s also a dog park for pet owners and an extensive trail system that residents can enjoy for biking or just a leisurely stroll.

Schools

Children in the Crosswinds community and Kyle are zoned for Hays CISD. From elementary all the way up through high school, the schools offer an amazing curriculum of educational and extra-curricular activities ranging from sports to music and theater.

Located within the Hays CISD for Crosswinds families are:

  • Plfuger Elementary – student/teacher ratio 15:1
  • Chapa Middle School – student/teacher ratio 13:1
  • Lehman High School – student/teacher ratio 16:1

Kyle also happens to be near several community and four-year colleges and universities, including:

  • Austin Community College (ACC) Hays Campus
  • Texas State University
  • UT at Austin
  • St. Edwards University
  • San Antonio College
  • Huston-Tillotson University

Access to Austin

A major draw for many people moving to Kyle is its close proximity to Austin. Considering that it’s just 21 miles to downtown Austin, 25 miles to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport, and an hour to San Antonio, Kyle is an ideal spot for those looking for the convenience of a larger city without the busyness of living in one.

Kyle at a Glance

Kyle may be one of the most popular spots to call home in Austin, but this small Texas city has a long history stretching back to the 19th century.

The area was settled in 1880, but it wasn’t until 1960 that its population cracked 1,000 people. Even then, Kyle was still a pretty sleepy town until the new millennium, when its population really began to grow between 2000 and 2010.

Today, Kyle enjoys a growing economy, affordable cost of living, low crime rate, and plenty of leisure and shopping options. Walking trails like the Plum Creek Trail system offer residents an ideal way to enjoy nature, and the Pie In The Sky Hot Air Balloon Festival draws thousands of people each year.

It’s this combination of convenience, affordability, and lifestyle that makes Crosswinds such an appealing place to call home. If you’re interested in all that Crosswinds has to offer and want to learn more about moving to Kyle and our available inventory of homes, reach out to us today.

Summer Activities Other Than Swimming + Playing Outside

Swing by the Crosswinds community pool on a sunny day in the summer, and you’re bound to see people taking a dip. Whether at the pool, beach, or lake – swimming is pretty much essential for summer survival in Texas.

That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t plenty of ways to make the most of the great outdoors in the summer months. Consider leaving the bathing suit at home and adding these outdoor activities to your summer bucket list.

Climb a Rock

Climbers from around the country come to this part of Texas to refine their skills on the area’s limestone rock faces. If you’re looking for a summer workout, climbing will definitely put your muscles to the test.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Reimer’s Ranch Park are two popular spots because of the diversity of climbing trails available. If you’re new to the sport or just want to work on your skills, consider signing up for a class or private lesson at Cruck Climbing Center in Austin. You’ll be able to perfect your technique under the guidance of seasoned climbing vets so that when you do tackle that 70-foot rock wall, you’re primed and ready.

Catch a Fish

Scaling a 100-foot cliff can certainly help take your mind off the hustle and bustle of modern life, but if you’re looking for something a bit less extreme, fishing can do the trick too. Fishing is an ideal summer activity for families, and whether you plan to keep and eat your catch or toss it back, there’s no shortage of great places in the area to cast a line.

Grab your tackle box and check out these fishing spots near Kyle:

  • Red Bud Isle
  • Lockhart State Park
  • McKinney Falls State Park
  • Lake Travis
  • Rebecca Creek
  • Onion Creek

Geocaching

If you’re unfamiliar with geocaching, it’s sort of along the lines of a treasure hunt using GPS. Individuals and organizations set up caches around a certain area and share the locations of these caches on the internet.

Participants then use the GPS capability on their phones or tablet to locate the coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a reward. There are essentially three rules for a fun round of geocaching:

  1. Take something from the cache
  2. Leave something in the cache
  3. Write about it in the logbook

Popular items to leave in the geocache for the next person include buttons, keychains, small toys, coins, or something unique to the area. Geocaching is a super fun way to explore Kyle, and you can even pick up a passport through the city to go on a Kyle GeoTour.

Catch a Game

The roar of the crowd, the smell of popcorn… there’s nothing quite like catching a baseball game in the summer. Kyle residents are lucky enough to have two teams in the area that they can cheer on. The Round Rock Express is a Triple-A team that plays at Dell Diamond Stadium in Round Rock, and the Austin Weirdos, a Pecos League team that takes the field at Govalle Park in Austin.

Whether you’re a Weirdos or Round Rock fan, a day at the ballpark is always a summer favorite.

With so much to do in the Kyle area during the summer, the question isn’t what should you do, but what should you do next? If you’re looking to explore all Kyle has to offer, check out the inventory of new homes in Crosswinds or contact the Crosswinds team.

Upgraded Living in Crosswinds

Buying a home takes some major planning. It’s a decision not to be taken lightly and there are numerous factors to consider. One thing all homebuyers have in common, though, is that they want to truly love the home they’re buying. It’s a simple enough truth, but there’s a lot to consider behind it.

Crosswinds is a master-planned community that aims to give Kyle residents an upgraded living experience. This is accomplished not only by offering beautifully constructed homes, but through a neighborhood setting that channels relaxation and community connection.

Healthy Living

Crosswinds was developed with the concept of offering families a community where they could truly enjoy life in the Texas prairie to the fullest. This means offering resort-style amenities such as a swimming pool and splash park for cooling off on those hot summer days, pickleball and basketball courts for games with friends, a playground for the kiddos, as well as picnic and grilling areas.

There are also walking trails, open play fields for soccer matches or a game of catch, and a dog park to give your furry friends some excitement.

Big City Convenience

Kyle has a lot going on these days such as the expansion of The Vybe trail system and the influx of new businesses with the NorthPoint Development. Of course, a major benefit of living in Kyle is its convenient proximity to Austin, while still being able to enjoy the slower pace that comes with living in a smaller city.

The data shows that more Americans are leaving big cities and opting to move to smaller and mid-size cities that are still relatively close to larger urban areas. This affords people all the career and entertainment perks of being close to a bigger city, without the headaches that often come with living in one. Crosswinds is only 20 miles south of Austin off I-35, making it an ideal location for city convenience and small-town living.

Functional Floor Plans

The Crosswinds community features an array of homes designed by award-winning builders who were carefully selected to offer functional floor plans for today’s homeowners. These distinctive homes come in a variety of sizes and architectural plans that incorporate both modern functionality and amenities with classic craftsmanship.

Currently, there are homes ready for a quick move-in by builders such as Milestone Community Builders, Highland Homes, and Pacesetter Homes. With open floor plans, extended outdoor living spaces, media rooms, and luxury kitchens, these homes offer comfortable living that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Exceptional Education

Crosswinds is served by the Hays Consolidated Independent School District. Children living in Crosswinds have the option to attend Pfluger Elementary which has a Great Schools rating of 8/10 and prides itself on molding young minds for academic excellence.

Chapa Middle School and Lehman High School also provide a robust educational and athletic curriculum designed to build strong character and foster lifelong learning in students.

Living in Crosswinds is about more than buying a house. It’s about making the decision to live in a community where you can enjoy where you live each and every day. If you’re interested in finding a home here, connect with the Crosswinds team today.

The Texas Hill Country is growing and that means Kyle is growing. New families are discovering the appeal of our community every day and are planting roots here. Victoria Vargas, the interim director of economic development for the City of Kyle, recently told KVUE News that Kyle saw 63% growth between 2010 and 2020 and that “growth is not expected to slow down any time soon.”

It’s not just our affordability and proximity to Austin that’s attracting folks to Kyle. From economic growth such as Lowe’s new distribution center and the development of Kyle Crossing Phase II to festivities like the Pie in the Sky Festival, a lot is happening in Kyle.

If you’re thinking about moving to Kyle or you’ve recently moved here and are looking to buy a home, the fall season is the perfect time to move to the Crosswinds community.

Outdoor Fun at Crosswinds

Don’t get us wrong, we love summer in Kyle, but by the end of August, it’s nice to have a break from those 100-degree temps. The average temperature in September in Kyle is 88 F, and by October it’s even cooler, making fall the perfect season to enjoy so many of the outdoor amenities at Crosswinds.

Our Sports Court is the perfect place to work up a sweat over a game of pickup basketball with friends, or perhaps see what all the buzz is about with pickleball. Meanwhile, the kiddos can enjoy the last few weeks of daylight savings time and burn off some energy after school or dinner on our community playscape.

Crosswinds residents got to spend the summer enjoying our resort-style pool and splash pad. (Don’t worry, there’s still plenty of time for a swim if you haven’t had a chance to take a dip yet.)

Crosswinds residents also have access to our hike and bike trails, as well as a dog park for our furry residents. One of the biggest highlights of the fall season is the return of football, and our community grills and picnic areas are perfect for cooking up some grub before kickoff.

Find Your Dream Home

Spring and summer tend to be the busiest months when it comes to home shopping, but don’t rule out buying a home in the fall. According to Zillow, sellers tend to lower prices in late summer, giving fall buyers a bit more flexibility when it comes to price.

The homes in Crosswinds have all been built by homebuilders that are leaders in the industry. Why Is Buying a New Home in Kyle Better Than in Austin?

Austin is one of the coolest and quirkiest cities in the U.S. People love it for its music venues, booming tech scene, diversity of entertainment, some of the best BBQ in the U.S., and Bat City. “Keep Austin weird” is a celebrated moniker and for good reason.

And of course, when you stroll along Sixth Street, you’ll encounter a lot of college students from the University of Texas at Austin and other colleges.

Here are the reasons why buying a new home in Kyle may be a better option than in Austin.

  1. Affordability

In the last decade, Austin has grown massively popular. Along with that comes soaring median housing prices. Many area real estate agents say happy homeowners love the affordable homes and lifestyle in Kyle. You can find a brand new house in the Crosswinds community in Kyle starting in the mid-$200s.

Property taxes are another advantage of living in Kyle. The city has recently reduced the property tax rate by 4 percent as Fox 7 Austin reports.

  1. Quieter Small-Town Lifestyle

With Austin being a quick trek away, Kyle residents relish the small-town lifestyle. They can go to Austin anytime they want to take advantage of its many offerings. Besides, more businesses have moved close to Kyle, some of which are big wigs like Lowe’s Kyle, Amazon’s Kyle facility, Tesla, and ENF Technology U.S. headquarters.

  1. Location

Kyle is located only 20 miles from downtown Austin. Additionally, many of the places you want to visit are located within 30 minutes from Kyle. And you can fly to many places, even international destination, from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (ABIA).

Kyle citizens love to visit Austin and find a happy medium by living on the outskirts of Austin. They’re close enough to take advantage of Austin’s incredible resources and entertainment.

These are not the only reasons, but they’re the biggest reasons Kyle residents share. Browse this blog and you’ll see all that Kyle has to offer! Besides, you cannot find a community like Crosswinds in Austin.

The landscape architects of Crosswinds worked to preserve the natural beauty of the Texas prairies that captivated the area’s first explorers. At the same time, the landscape architects wanted to design a community for families that brings everyone and the outdoors together.
