Best Pies in the Pie Capital: The Texas Pie Company

Kyle residents are serious about their pie. After all, the city is the “pie capital of Texas” and home of the Pie in the Sky festival. Naturally, any bakery in town that puts a pie on its counter knows that it’s going to be judged by some pretty pie-savvy customers. With decades of pie baking experience under belt, however, it’s safe to say that Julie Albertson, founder of The Texas Pie Company, knows how to bake an award-worthy pie.

Julie opened her first bakery in 1986, but was baking long before that. “I started baking with my grandmother in East Texas on her farm,” she told KVUE News. “When I was really little I used to stand on soup cans so I could reach the counter [and help bake].” It was in those formative baking years that she learned the ins and outs of each pie recipe and how to perfect each pie’s unique flavors.

Shareworthy Pies

Texas Pie Company specializes in creating delicious and unique pies that will satisfy any craving. Julie and her staff take pride in crafting each pie with care to ensure a perfect flavor combination and crust that is buttery, flaky and delicately sweetened.

You really can’t go wrong with whatever pie you choose but customer favorites include flavors such as Southern Pecan, Lemon Chess, Buttermilk (Julie’s personal fav), Almond Joy, Chocolate Fudge, and Peanut Butter Mousse. The bakery also has an array of fruit pies like Peach, Dutch Apple, Blueberry, Cherry, and Blackberry.

Now if cream pies are your jam, Texas Pie Company offers Key Lime, Coconut, and Chocolate. And when the fall and winter months roll around, you’ll naturally find Pumpkin and Praline pies waiting to be snatched up by customers.

More Tasty Options

If you’re looking for an extra treat to go with your slice of pie though, or you’re in the mood for a full meal, the bakery has you covered. A range of cookies, brownies, and dessert bars are available as well as plenty of savory options. Daily lunch specials are offered with items like Meatloaf, Chicken Breast with Cranberry, and King Ranch Chicken, in addition to several sandwiches.

Now, if you only have time for pie and not a full lunch but want to get something to go, consider picking up a quiche or casserole. The quiches are prepared with fresh eggs, whole milk, and an assortment of fresh veggies, proteins, and shredded cheeses. Casserole dishes include popular comfort foods like Three Cheese Lasagna, Chicken Pot Pie, and Beef Stroganoff. Everything is made in the kitchen daily and can be ordered hot for pick up.

The Texas Pie Company is open Monday through Saturday with lunch items available until 3 PM and pie available until 6:30 PM on weekdays, 4 on Saturdays. Take a tip from us though, if you have your heart set on a particular pie flavor, get there early because when it’s gone it’s gone!

Kyle is full of great local spots and businesses that make it a wonderful place for families of all ages and lifestyles to call home. If you’d like to learn more about making Kyle your home, contact the Crosswinds team.

Something Beautiful

A floral bouquet might not be a new and revolutionary Valentine’s Day gift, but it’s a classic. Always has been, and always will be. The Kyle Flower Shop has a skilled floral design staff capable of creating the perfect arrangement for every occasion and event. Not surprisingly, this is one of the shop’s busiest times of the year and it offers a range of bouquets from classic roses to lilies, carnations, and everything in between. Looking for something a little more unique? The staff is happy to work on custom pieces that are sure to impress.

Something Unique

Subscription boxes are one of the fastest-growing sectors of retail with the market expected to hit $65 billion by 2027! What makes them so appealing is that there’s a box for just about every interest out there and who doesn’t like getting a mystery box of goodies in the mail?

Food boxes ranging from cheese to coffee, nuts, and even oysters are a popular favorite. There are also boxes for hobbies such as jigsaw puzzles, needlepoint, gardening, and fans of true crime novels.

Something Adventurous (or Relaxing)

If you’re looking to create some new memories with your significant other, consider opting for a weekend getaway – or even just a day trip. Kyle residents are fortunate that we’re close to some pretty fantastic places that are less than a few hours away.

Local Business Highlight: Silo Glass Studio

Less than a half hour’s drive from Kyle, you’ll find Silo Glass Studio in San Marcos. Here you’ll discover a community of artists creating some truly stunning pieces of work. Glass is the prominent material of choice, but the artists here also work in both wood and metal. Whether you’re looking to add some locally-created art to your home, or you’re looking to test your skills in glasswork, Silo Glass Studio is the place!

Over 30 Years of Creativity

Today, the studio is spacious enough to showcase the 3D works of more than two dozen artists, but way back in 1985, the studio founded by Ralph and Jean Petley was much smaller. It specialized in stained glass and for a few years even sold antiques. Chester John and Elissa Beach would eventually buy it in 2014 and with that purchase came a complete overhaul of the space.

The old studio was torn down and a new studio was built with upgrades to the property such as a koi pond and two waterfalls outside. The new Silo Glass was also able to expand in size, adding more than 2,000 square feet – making it the largest glass studio in Central Texas.

Not only is the larger studio able to accommodate more visitors, but it allows its artists to spread out and create some incredible works of art.

The Showroom and Exhibits

To simply describe the pieces here as “beautiful” or to try to put them into a one-size-fits-all category wouldn’t do them justice. Some pieces are realistic and look like they could come to life, while others are more abstract and serve as an interesting focal point to add to any room. The studio has some pieces that are only for display, but if you’re on the hunt for a glass piece to add to your home or business, some pieces are available to purchase

Many of the artists also work with customers on specially commissioned products that can bring a truly unique and customized touch to your office space or home. Ranging from small to big and bold, each piece of art is a one-of-a-kind creation that you won’t find anywhere else.

Classes

One of our favorite things about Silo Glass Studio is that it’s not just a place to admire the works of local artists, but it offers visitors a chance to get in touch with their inner artists.

The studio offers a range of classes focused on a variety of projects for both beginner, intermediate, and advanced skill levels. In one of the two-hour beginner classes, for example, participants will learn to make a glass coaster dish. More advanced and intermediate classes focus on skills such as fusing and open-faced casting that can be used in jewelry making and creating hand-crafted ornaments.

Whether you want to embrace your artistic spirit, shop for a special gift, or simply check out some local art, a visit to Silo Glass Studio is an opportunity to see some of the area’s most talented artists at work.

Silo Glass Studio in nearby San Marcos is one of the many places that make for a fun afternoon day trip for Kyle residents. To learn more about Kyle and finding a home here, contact the Crosswinds team

Get Outside in Kyle, TX

Although winter has technically just begun, many parts of Texas are already feeling like spring with crisp mornings and warm afternoons. Whether you are looking for more ways to spend days outside or you have more free time on your schedule this time of year, whatever the case may be, here are just a few ways to get outside and discover (or rediscover) all that Kyle has going on.

County Line Polo Club – Did you know that Kyle has its polo club? That’s right, you can try your hand at the sport of British aristocrats without having to jump aboard a flight to England. The County Line Polo Club is a local polo club open to the public that specializes in teaching aspiring and skilled equestrians the sport of polo. The club’s instructors offer both individual classes as well as team training to individuals of all ages. The club even has matches for riders to show off their mallet-swinging skills.

If you’re looking to try a new sport this year, you just found it. Giddy up!

Sports and Rec Leagues – Perhaps you prefer sports that don’t require you to climb aboard another animal… we get it. The Kyle Parks and Rec Department has options aimed at more traditional sports with winter and spring leagues

Adult sports leagues include roller hockey as well as kickball, which kicks off at the end of this month. If you’re looking for something a little more low-key, there’s also the adult spring fishing tournament happening in April – with a cash jackpot!

Kids aren’t left out of the fun as they have their youth fishing tournament, as well as leagues for basketball, swimming, and hockey in the winter and spring months.

City Parks – Sometimes making the most of the great outdoors can be as simple as going for a walk. Two of our favorite places to take in some natural beauty are Lake Kyle and Mary Kyle Hartson City Park.

Lake Kyle is a wonderful spot for a morning or evening walk and is a popular destination for fishing. Birding enthusiasts will also enjoy visiting this park, with herons, ducks, egrets, and other species of waterfowl calling the lake home. Starting in early spring, Lake Kyle is a great place to enjoy some beautiful wildflowers, including a large population of Bluebonnets, the Texas state flower.

Mary Kyle Hartson City Park is a small but charming park and has been part of the city since the early 1900s. It’s a great place for enjoying your lunch break outside or killing some time with the kiddos. In 2020, the city made several improvements including a playground, picnic tables, a rain garden, and a 20-foot-wide promenade.

Plum Creek Golf Course – Kyle is in close proximity to some of the best golfing in Texas and if you’re looking to hit the links in the new year, then you’ll want to check out Plum Creek Golf Course. The 18-hole public course is surrounded by the “natural beauty of Texas live oaks, limestone, rolling hills, and Texas wildflowers,” making each drive down the fairway all the more impressive.

The course also offers private lessons, a pro shop, and bar and grill for guests to enjoy a meal or cocktail before tee time.

There’s plenty more Kyle has to offer when it comes to outdoor recreation. If you’d like to learn more about finding a home in this wonderful city, contact the Crosswinds team today.

Productive Habits to Start the New Year

We all know that the new year is a time when many of us pin a list of resolutions or goals that we hope to accomplish in the next 365 days. Most of us are probably also familiar that a great deal of those resolutions fizzle out by the end of February.

Sometimes achieving a goal is all about developing good, consistent habits to set you on the right track for meeting that goal. On average, it takes around 66 days to develop a behavior into a new habit … here are a few you might want to consider trying on for size.

Healthy Habits in 2023

Exercising and eating healthy are some of the most common resolutions people set for themselves in the new year. One of the best healthy habits you can adopt is drinking more water. Drinking water helps curb food cravings, ease digestion, hydrate your muscles, and transport nutrients throughout the body.

It’s also an incredibly easy habit to pick up! Buy a new water bottle and keep it by your keys before you head out the door in the morning. Keep it by your desk while you work and before you know it, you’ll be sipping H2O 24/7.

We hear it often: “Exercise more!” Easier said than done, right? Well, maybe not. Mental tricks can help you develop a good exercise routine. Set a reminder on your phone to do 2 minutes of exercise three days a week during a time when you know you’re generally not too busy (everybody can squeeze in 2 minutes). Increase it to 5 minutes the next week. Then 10… 20…40… working up to one hour. Before you know it, the habit is set.

Don’t pigeonhole yourself into one workout either, or you risk getting bored easily. Take a class at the Kyle recreation center for a week. If you live in Crosswinds, hit the treadmill in the Crosswinds gym the next week, walk on a trail, or swim laps in the pool during the warmer months. Pretty soon, regular exercise will be second nature.

Strengthen Your Mind

Put your Kyle Library card to good use in 2023 and make reading for pleasure a weekly habit. Not only will regular reading increase your knowledge of the world around you as well as broaden your vocabulary, but it will strengthen your memory and ability to effectively communicate with others.

And speaking of communication, a great new habit to work on in the new year is the art of listening. As Forbes points out, being a good listener can help reinforce bonds in both your personal and professional relationships. It might sound easy, but active listening can be tricky for a lot of people.

A few tips to keep in mind include trying to maintain good eye contact, don’t interrupt but instead focusing on what the person is saying, and waiting for the speaker to pause. Consciously trying to understand and visualize what the other person is saying can also help make you a better listener.

There is going to be a lot happening in Kyle in 2023, and adopting a few good habits at the start of the year can help you make the most of it. If you’d like to learn more about finding a home in a community that encourages an active lifestyle, reach out to the Crosswinds team.

Hays City Store in Nearby Driftwood

A good problem to have in the restaurant industry is the need to expand due to a high volume of customers from neighboring communities. That’s exactly the sort of good problem that Hays City Store & Ice House has found through its success.

Located in nearby Driftwood, this sports bar and diner is the perfect place to check out the next time you need a tasty bite and cold beer (they have over 50 on tap).

Hays City History

Although Hays City had a rough start in 1908, Hays City Store & Ice House wears the name proudly, and has proven successful. Fast forward about 80 years and Hays City Store opened as a gas station/mini-mart in the 1980s in what is now Driftwood, Texas. A decade later a luncheonette was added, and in 2015, the cafe expanded into a full-service breakfast, lunch, and dinner restaurant. Not only was Texas comfort food on the table, but the menu now featured local beers and wine, as well as craft cocktails.

Business was so good for owners Tamra and Travis Tindol that they needed to expand their space in 2017. This also led to a tweak in the name, tagging on “Ice House” to go with the extra seating (both indoor and outdoor), draft bar, and wood-fire pizza oven.

Irresistible Eats and Drinks

Today, the restaurant is open seven days a week. The restaurant attracts hungry patrons from both Kyle and Wimberly, as well as Buda and Dripping Springs, so planning ahead and making a reservation isn’t a bad idea.

Once seated though, you’ll find no shortage of irresistible offerings on the menu like smoked wings with both sauces and dry rubs, chili cheese fries, fresh soups and salads, and mouth-watering entrée items. Prime rib is offered Thursday through Saturday and a variety of burgers with toppings such as bacon jam, goat cheese, and fried onions are sure to satisfy taste buds.

A great meal needs a great drink and patrons will find no shortage of libations to wash down their meal. As mentioned, there are over 50 beers on tap, but you can also choose from local wines and specialty small-batch bourbons. Swing by during the week and you’ll be treated to drink specials like discounted Mexican martinis, frozen hurricanes, and boozed-up milkshakes.

Nothing goes better with a good meal and tasty beverage than some live music and Hays City Store has a full music calendar that finds local artists taking the stage six out of seven nights a week.

Being less than 10 miles from Kyle, it’s easy to see why Hays City Store & Ice House is such a draw for residents in search of a great meal. It’s one of those local spots that really makes you appreciate all Kyle has to offer. If you’d like to find a home here, contact the Crosswinds team to learn more about our master-planned community.

Upgraded Living in Crosswinds

Buying a home takes some major planning. It’s a decision not to be taken lightly and there are numerous factors to consider. One thing all homebuyers have in common, though, is that they want to truly love the home they’re buying. It’s a simple enough truth, but there’s a lot to consider behind it.

Crosswinds is a master-planned community that aims to give Kyle residents an upgraded living experience. This is accomplished not only by offering beautifully constructed homes, but through a neighborhood setting that channels relaxation and community connection.

Healthy Living

Crosswinds was developed with the concept of offering families a community where they could truly enjoy life in the Texas prairie to the fullest. This means offering resort-style amenities such as a swimming pool and splash park for cooling off on those hot summer days, pickleball and basketball courts for games with friends, a playground for the kiddos, as well as picnic and grilling areas.

There are also walking trails, open play fields for soccer matches or a game of catch, and a dog park to give your furry friends some excitement.

Big City Convenience

Kyle has a lot going on these days such as the expansion of The Vybe trail system and the influx of new businesses with the NorthPoint Development. Of course, a major benefit of living in Kyle is its convenient proximity to Austin, while still being able to enjoy the slower pace that comes with living in a smaller city.

The data shows that more Americans are leaving big cities and opting to move to smaller and mid-size cities that are still relatively close to larger urban areas. This affords people all the career and entertainment perks of being close to a bigger city, without the headaches that often come with living in one. Crosswinds is only 20 miles south of Austin off I-35, making it an ideal location for city convenience and small-town living.

Functional Floor Plans

The Crosswinds community features an array of homes designed by award-winning builders who were carefully selected to offer functional floor plans for today’s homeowners. These distinctive homes come in a variety of sizes and architectural plans that incorporate both modern functionality and amenities with classic craftsmanship.

Currently, there are homes ready for a quick move-in by builders such as Milestone Community Builders, Highland Homes, and Pacesetter Homes. With open floor plans, extended outdoor living spaces, media rooms, and luxury kitchens, these homes offer comfortable living that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Exceptional Education

Crosswinds is served by the Hays Consolidated Independent School District. Children living in Crosswinds have the option to attend Pfluger Elementary which has a Great Schools rating of 8/10 and prides itself on molding young minds for academic excellence.

Chapa Middle School and Lehman High School also provide a robust educational and athletic curriculum designed to build strong character and foster lifelong learning in students.

Living in Crosswinds is about more than buying a house. It’s about making the decision to live in a community where you can enjoy where you live each and every day. If you’re interested in finding a home here, connect with the Crosswinds team today.

Add a Dog to your Family in 2023

If you’re looking to add a dog to your family in 2023, here are a few tips to make the process a bit smoother and ensure everybody starts off on the right foot (and paw).

How to choose the right dog for your family & lifestyle

Choosing the right dog can make all the difference. Just like humans, dogs can have differing needs, personalities, and quirks. Before taking in a new pet, consider your lifestyle and what you value most in your life. Are you super active? Do you travel a lot? Do you have a yard? Do you have small children or care for an elderly parent? Can you afford to take on the financial responsibility of a dog? (Vet bills aren’t getting cheaper.)

These are all questions you should ask yourself before you head to the pet store to start picking out collars and chew toys. Some dogs need more care and attention than others, and to get the true life-enriching benefit of owning a dog, it’s key that you’re ready for a dog.

Consider the Type of Dog

The American Kennel Club currently recognizes 190 dog breeds. Factor in unrecognized breeds like the popular Labradoodle and other mixed breeds, and that’s a lot of canines. Some dogs, like those of the working breed variety, need not just daily exercise but thrive best when they have a task to do. Small and toy breeds tend to be the opposite, and are much more adaptable to urban environments and apartment life.

Have kids? Dogs can be especially fantastic companions and not only act as protectors but provide an opportunity for children to learn about kindness and responsibility. Other benefits of children owning a dog include higher self-esteem and even the possibility of developing an immunity against certain allergies.

Local Pooches

Ready for the fun part? Consider these local organizations.

PAWS Shelter of Central Texas – With locations in both Kyle and Dripping Springs, PAWS has been connecting people with pets in need of a home since 1986. In addition to providing adoption services for dogs, they also run a foster program. When you foster a dog you not only get the opportunity to see if you’re a good match with the dog, but you help the shelter free up needed kennel space, while giving a dog a sense of home to prepare them to meet their forever family.

Wimberley Adoption Group & Rescue (WAG) – Founded in 2009, this non-profit was developed to help abandoned dogs in Hays County find a home. If you’d like to help WAG succeed in their mission of finding a loving home for each pup under their care, you can contact them to set up a meet and greet on one of their adoption days.

Austin Dog Rescue – Since 2007, the Austin Dog Rescue has been rescuing and finding homes for homeless dogs in Central Texas. There’s no physical shelter as the organization relies on volunteers to foster each of their residents until that lucky day when a dog finds its forever home.

Speaking of forever homes, the Crosswinds community has a lot to offer pet owners, including walking trails to explore and a dog park for pups to run and play. If you’d like to learn more, reach out to us

Kyle’s Neighboring Cities

The greater Austin-San Antonio area has grown rapidly in the last decade and is well on its way to approaching a “metroplex that rivals DFW,” according to Astonia. The Greater Austin-San Antonio Corridor Council reports that around 4.5 million people currently call the area home and by 2030, that number could hit 7 million.

With Kyle being part of that expansive growth, it’s only appropriate that we’re familiar with our neighbors to the east, west, north, south, and all points in between. From New Braunfels to Georgetown, let’s explore Kyle’s neighboring cities.

Buda – This Texas town of 7,300 residents is only about 8 miles from Kyle. Head north on I-35 and you should be there in less than 15 minutes. While it may be small, the town has grown 103% since the 2000 Census, with a growth in economic development and community events to match. Pay a visit during one of their several events such as Arts in the Park, Boo-Da Halloween, or the Buda Trail of Lights!

San Marcos – Known for the San Marcos and Blanco rivers that run through it, this city of 45,000 residents is less than 10 miles from Kyle. San Marcos is experiencing some of the same economic growth as the other cities in the area, even if at a slower pace, reports San Antonio Express-News. This city is the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors, such as river activities, camping trips, hiking, and the world’s first commercial show cave.

New Braunfels – Located in Comal County off the I-35, New Braunfels is the closest suburb of San Antonio and is around 30 minutes from Kyle. It’s home to around 58,000 residents and its largest employers are the Comal ISD and Schlitterbahn Water Park. Visitors can see New Braunfels’ Old World, German heritage throughout the town, from open-air beer gardens, the annual world-famous Wurstfest, and the city’s historic district, Gruene—home to some of the state’s oldest running establishments.

Lockhart – The seat of Caldwell County, this community of around 13,000 residents is about a half hour’s drive from Kyle. Lockhart State Park is a popular attraction for golfing, camping, and fishing, and fans of BBQ flock to this Texas town to eat at the iconic Kreuz Market, which has been in business for well over 100 years.

Georgetown – According to Community Impact, Georgetown isn’t just the fastest growing city in the Texas Hill Country, but one of the most rapidly growing in the United States. With a population now of around 75,000, Georgetown has a tight-knit community to enjoy its charming downtown area with a variety of local shops and restaurants. This city is around an hour’s drive from Kyle and is a day trip destination for its swimming holes and the popular Inner Space Cavern.

These are just a few of the communities worth exploring in the Austin and San Antonio area. As a resident of Kyle, you are not only located in a wonderful city with appeal for all lifestyles but you’re located in a whole corridor of growing cities with unique attractions. If you’d like to learn more about all Kyle has to offer and find a home here, contact the Crosswinds team.

Kyle Go Resolution Run & Polar Bear Splash

If you’re looking for a way to kick off the new year that’s guaranteed to plunge you straight into 2023, then look no further than the Go Resolution Run and Polar Bear Splash.

Whether it’s your first New Year’s plunge or your 99th, here’s everything you need to know about this chilly and invigorating way to start 2023 in Kyle!

The Go Resolution Run

Whether exercising more is one of your New Year’s resolutions or not, participating in this 5K run is a great way to welcome the start of a new year. The run begins at 9 AM on January 1 with runners gathering at Gregg-Clarke Park, 1231-1301 W. Center St. Registering for the run costs $15 and all runners must register by December 28. You’ll want to register by December 11 to secure an event t-shirt for yourself. (Hey, it’s gonna be chilly, so every layer of clothing counts!)

No judgment if a 5K is more than you can handle after a night of New Year’s Eve revelry, there’s also a 1K run that is free to participate in.

The run is open to participants (and dogs) of all ages. Last year’s run was broken up into select age groups with awards going to the top finishers in their selected categories. While there is parking available, a big turnout is expected, so if you have friends who are also participating, carpooling is suggested. Now for the main event…

The Polar Bear Splash

This annual New Year’s Day tradition is believed to have originated in Boston but has since spread worldwide. Many polar bear splashes take place with participants charging into the ocean or an icy lake, but since nobody wants to be plunging into Lake Kyle in January, this splash will take place at James Adkins Pool, 1100 W. Center St, at 10 AM.

Early registration for the event began in November and is $20 through December 12. Participants can still register from December 13 through the end of the year, but registration will be $25 and you’re not guaranteed an event hoodie because of limited supply. And trust us, you’re going to want that hoodie waiting for you when you get out of the pool!

Participating polar bears will gather for the splash and take the plunge together at 10:30 AM, swimming across the pool. For those brave participants who want to run and take the plunge, you’ll receive a commemorative item in addition to your free T-shirt and hoodie.

And after a winter run and swim in a freezing pool, you’re probably going to want to warm up with a hot meal from a place like Aviator Pizza or Milt’s Pit BBQ, both nearby in Kyle.

The Resolution Run and Polar Bear Splash are just a few examples of the many fun community events that happen each year in Kyle. If you’d like to find the perfect home in this wonderful city reach out to the Crosswinds team to learn more about our home builders.
