Whether you’re planning a sweet surprise for Mom or helping little ones get creative, crafting at home is a meaningful (and fun!) way to celebrate the amazing moms in our lives.

At Crosswinds in Kyle, TX, we know the joy of spending quality time together. So, grab your supplies and get ready to turn your kitchen table into a creative workshop! Here are a few easy, fun, and heartfelt Mother’s Day craft ideas perfect for kids, teens, and even grown-up kids.

1. Handprint Flower Bouquet

This one’s a classic, and for good reason. Handprint flowers are sweet and personal and something Mom will cherish for years.

What You’ll Need:

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue or tape
  • Green pipe cleaners or craft sticks
  • Markers or crayons

How To: Trace your child’s hand on colorful paper and cut it out. These become your flower petals! Glue the handprints to the top of a green pipe cleaner and bundle them together to make a bouquet. Add a note or tag that says, “If moms were flowers, I’d pick you!”

2. DIY Coupon Book

Give Mom the gift of thoughtful gestures with a custom-made coupon book. This is especially great for older kids and teens.

What You’ll Need:

  • Index cards or cut-up construction paper
  • Hole punch and ribbon or staples
  • Markers or pens

How To: Write out different coupons, such as “One free hug,” “Breakfast in bed,” or “Help with laundry.” Decorate each one, stack them up, and bind them with ribbon. It’s cute, personal, and full of love.

3. Painted Flower Pots

If your mom has a green thumb (or wants to start gardening), this craft doubles as a gift.

What You’ll Need:

  • Small terracotta pots
  • Acrylic paint and brushes
  • Potting soil and a plant or flower

How To: Let the kids paint fun designs or sweet messages on the pots. Once dry, fill with soil and plant a flower, herb, or succulent. It’s a gift that keeps on growing!

4. Photo Collage or Frame

Help Mom relive some of her favorite moments with a DIY photo craft.

What You’ll Need:

  • A blank photo frame or cardstock
  • Printed family photos
  • Glue, scissors, and optional embellishments like stickers or washi tape

How To: Create a collage of favorite family photos in a decorated frame or on a poster board. Add little notes or drawings to personalize it even more. It’s the kind of keepsake she’ll love to display.

5. Jar of Love Notes

Sometimes, simple words mean the most. This craft is all about writing from the heart.

What You’ll Need:

  • A clean mason jar or recycled container
  • Strips of colorful paper
  • Pens or markers
  • Ribbon to decorate the jar

How To: Write one thing you love about Mom on each strip of paper. Fold them up and place them in the jar. She can pull one out whenever she needs a little boost. Bonus points if everyone in the family contributes!

Revamp Your Outdoor Space: Landscaping Ideas to Welcome Warmer Weather

Spring has arrived, and with it comes the perfect opportunity to breathe new life into your outdoor space! As the weather warms up, you’ll likely be spending more time outside, whether it’s in your backyard, on your patio, or enjoying the green spaces around your home in Crosswinds. A fresh and inviting landscape not only enhances curb appeal but also creates a relaxing retreat for you and your family to enjoy. If you’re ready to give your outdoor space a seasonal refresh, here are some simple and effective ways to spruce things up for spring and summer.

1. Clean Up & Declutter Your Yard

Before diving into new projects, start by tidying up your outdoor space. Winter can leave behind fallen leaves, broken branches, and other debris that make your yard look untidy.

To-Do List:

  • Rake up leaves and twigs.
  • Trim back overgrown bushes and trees.
  • Remove any weeds from garden beds and pathways.
  • Clean off patios, decks, and outdoor furniture.

A clean slate will make it easier to plan and implement fresh landscaping ideas!

2. Refresh Your Lawn

A lush, green lawn sets the tone for a beautiful outdoor space. After winter, your grass may need a little TLC to bring it back to life.

Lawn Care Tips:

  • Aerate the soil to help water and nutrients reach the roots.
  • Reseed any bare patches and apply fertilizer.
  • Mow regularly but avoid cutting grass too short to maintain healthy growth.
  • Water deeply and consistently, especially in warmer months.

A well-maintained lawn is the foundation of a great outdoor space!

3. Plant Seasonal Flowers & Greenery

Adding vibrant flowers and fresh greenery is a simple way to enhance the beauty of your yard. Choose plants that thrive in the Texas heat to keep your garden looking great all season long.

Best Spring & Summer Plants for Texas:

  • Colorful Flowers: Lantana, petunias, marigolds, and zinnias.
  • Drought-Resistant Plants: Succulents, agave, and yucca.
  • Shade-Providing Trees: Crepe myrtles and live oaks.
  • Herbs & Veggies: Basil, rosemary, tomatoes, and peppers.

A mix of flowers, shrubs, and edible plants will make your outdoor space both beautiful and functional.

4. Update Outdoor Furniture & Decor

Your outdoor space should feel just as inviting as the inside of your home. Freshening up your patio or backyard with new furniture and decor can make a huge difference.

Easy Upgrades:

  • Clean or repaint outdoor furniture for a fresh look.
  • Add new cushions and outdoor rugs in bright, summery colors.
  • String up fairy lights or lanterns for cozy evening ambiance.
  • Incorporate decorative planters, bird feeders, or wind chimes for extra charm.

Small changes can make your space feel brand new!

5. Mulch & Redefine Garden Beds

A fresh layer of mulch not only enhances the look of your garden but also helps retain moisture and keep weeds at bay.

Steps to Refresh Your Garden Beds:

  • Pull out any weeds or dead plants.
  • Edge around the beds to create defined borders.
  • Apply a new layer of mulch (2-3 inches thick) in natural or colored varieties.
  • Arrange plants in layers for a visually appealing effect.

Mulching instantly makes garden beds look polished while keeping plants healthy.

6. Install a Water Feature or Fire Pit

For a major upgrade, consider adding a focal point like a water feature or fire pit to your outdoor space.

Benefits:

  • A water fountain or small pond adds a peaceful, soothing element to your yard.
  • A fire pit creates a cozy gathering space for summer nights and roasting marshmallows.
  • Both features can boost curb appeal and property value!

Choose a feature that suits your space and lifestyle to create a relaxing retreat.

7. Set Up a Functional Outdoor Living Area

Turn your backyard into an extension of your home by creating designated areas for dining, relaxing, and playing.

Ideas to Try:

  • A shaded dining area with an umbrella or pergola.
  • A comfortable lounge space with weatherproof seating.
  • A kid-friendly play area with a sandbox or swing set.
  • A garden nook with benches for reading or unwinding.

A well-planned outdoor space makes it easy to enjoy your home all season long!

8. Add Pathways & Lighting

Pathways and lighting not only improve safety but also enhance the look of your outdoor space.

Simple Enhancements:

  • Use stone, gravel, or stepping stones to create garden paths.
  • Add solar-powered lights along walkways for soft evening illumination.
  • Use LED string lights or lanterns for a warm, inviting glow.

These touches make your yard more accessible and enjoyable after sunset.

Welcome Spring & Summer with a Beautiful Outdoor Space!

There’s no better time than now to freshen up your landscape and create an outdoor space you’ll love spending time in. Whether it’s planting new flowers, updating patio furniture, or adding cozy lighting, these simple improvements will make your home feel refreshed and inviting.

Here at Crosswinds, we love seeing neighbors enjoy their beautiful outdoor spaces, whether it’s in their backyards, on their patios, or in the scenic community parks. What You Need:

  • Colored construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Green pipe cleaners
  • Paint (washable, kid-friendly)
  • Paintbrush

How to Make It:

Have your child dip their hand in paint and press it onto the paper to create flower shapes.

Cut out the handprint flowers once they dry.
Attach green pipe cleaners as stems using glue.

Arrange them in a “bouquet” and place them in a paper vase (you can fold and decorate a small piece of cardstock for this).

This craft is not only fun but also a great way to capture your child’s little hands as a special springtime memory!

2. Egg Carton Caterpillars

Transform an old egg carton into an adorable caterpillar with this simple craft.

What You Need:

  • Egg carton (cut into strips of 4-5 cups)
  • Paint and paintbrushes
  • Googly eyes
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Glue

How to Make It:

Cut an egg carton into a strip of connected cups to form the caterpillar’s body.

Let your child paint each section in bright, fun colors.
Once dry, glue on googly eyes and poke pipe cleaner “antennae” into the first cup.

Draw on a smile with a marker, and your caterpillar is ready to wiggle!

3. DIY Bird Feeders

Springtime brings chirping birds to the neighborhood, so why not make a feeder to welcome them?

What You Need:

  • Toilet paper rolls or pinecones
  • Peanut butter (or sun butter for allergies)
  • Birdseed
  • String or twine

How to Make It:

Spread peanut butter all over the toilet paper roll or pinecone.
Roll it in birdseed until fully coated.

Attach a piece of string so you can hang it outside on a tree or fence.

This is a great way to teach kids about nature while encouraging them to observe the birds in their own backyard.

4. Paper Plate Butterflies

Bring a touch of spring indoors with these colorful butterfly crafts.

What You Need:

  • Paper plates
  • Paint or markers
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Scissors
  • Glue

How to Make It:

Cut a paper plate in half to create butterfly wings.
Let your child paint and decorate each side.

Once dry, glue the two halves together at an angle to form butterfly wings.

Use a pipe cleaner as the body, twisting the ends for antennae.

These bright butterflies can be used as decorations for your home or even turned into a mobile to hang from the ceiling!

5. Spring-Themed Suncatchers

These beautiful suncatchers will brighten up any window in your home!

What You Need:

  • Contact paper
  • Tissue paper (various colors)
  • Scissors
  • Paper frames (cut into shapes like flowers, butterflies, or raindrops)

How to Make It:

Cut out a frame from construction paper (such as a flower or a butterfly outline).

Cut a piece of contact paper and stick it behind the frame.

Let your child place small pieces of colored tissue paper inside the frame to create a stained-glass effect.

Once complete, press another piece of contact paper over it to seal everything in place.

Stick it to a sunny window and watch the colors shine!

1. Declutter for a Clean Slate

Before diving into scrubbing and polishing, begin by decluttering each room. Moving into a new home often involves bringing items you may no longer need. Use this opportunity to:

  • Sort and Donate: Go through closets, drawers, and storage spaces. Donate gently used clothing, toys, and household items to local charities in Kyle.
  • Purge Expired Goods: Check your pantry, medicine cabinet, and cleaning supplies for expired products. Properly dispose of these items to free up space.
  • Create Organization Systems: Invest in storage bins, drawer dividers, and labels to keep your belongings tidy and easily accessible.

2. Refresh Your Walls and Surfaces

New homes often come with pristine walls, but adding a touch of maintenance can keep them looking fresh for years to come:

  • Dust and Wash Walls: Use a microfiber cloth or a gentle cleaning solution to remove dust and smudges from walls and baseboards.
  • Polish Fixtures: Clean and polish light switches, door handles, and cabinet hardware to restore their shine.
  • Touch-Up Paint: Use leftover paint to make touch-ups for minor scuffs or marks. This keeps your home looking as beautiful as the day you moved in.

3. Deep Clean Carpets and Floors

Floors endure a lot of wear and tear, especially with the excitement of moving in and settling down. Ensure they’re ready for the season:

  • Vacuum Thoroughly: Use a vacuum with a HEPA filter to capture allergens and dust.
  • Steam Clean Carpets: Renting a steam cleaner or hiring a professional can eliminate deep-set dirt and odors.
  • Polish Hard Floors: Use appropriate cleaners to bring back their luster and protect the finish for hardwood or tile.

4. Revitalize Your Kitchen

As the heart of your home, the kitchen deserves extra attention during your spring cleaning:

  • Clean Appliances: Wipe down your refrigerator, oven, microwave, and dishwasher. If possible, clean behind and beneath these appliances.
  • Organize Cabinets: Arrange pantry items, spices, and cookware for easy access. Consider adding shelf liners for added protection.
  • Sanitize Surfaces: Disinfect countertops, sinks, and cutting boards to maintain a hygienic cooking environment.

5. Refresh Bedrooms and Bathrooms

Create relaxing and rejuvenating spaces by giving bedrooms and bathrooms a springtime makeover:

  • Wash Bedding: Launder duvets, comforters, and mattress protectors. Rotate or flip mattresses for even wear.
  • Deep Clean Bathrooms: Scrub tile grout, clean shower heads, and replace old shower curtains or liners.
  • Declutter Vanity Spaces: Organize cosmetics, toiletries, and medicine cabinets. Dispose of expired products and streamline your essentials.

Turn your backyard into a mini campground for a night of fun and adventure! Pitch a tent, roast marshmallows over a fire pit (or make s’mores in the oven if needed), and tell stories under the stars. Crosswinds’ clear Texas skies make stargazing a magical experience.

If you’d like to make the evening even more educational, use a stargazing app to help your kids identify constellations and planets. It’s a wonderful way to combine fun with a bit of learning.

3. Family Sports Day at Windy Sports Park

Windy Sports Park, located within the Crosswinds community, is the perfect spot to host a family sports day. Set up friendly competitions with soccer, frisbee, or relay races. Create a mini-tournament where each family member gets to choose a sport or game.

Remember to bring snacks and drinks for breaks in between. At the end of the day, celebrate everyone’s efforts with a small award ceremony, complete with homemade medals or ribbons.

4. DIY Water Park in Your Backyard

A backyard water day can be a refreshing break for everyone as the weather warms up. Set up sprinklers, a slip-and-slide, or an inflatable kiddie pool for hours of water fun. Encourage water balloon games or host a family water gun battle.

For added fun, create a “beach day” vibe with beach towels, tropical music, and refreshing lemonade or mocktails for the whole family.

5. Crosswinds’ Amenity Center Fun

Crosswinds’ impressive amenity center is a hub of entertainment for families. Spend a day lounging by the resort-style pool or challenge your kids to a game at the basketball court.

You can also organize a mini “Crosswinds Olympics” by setting up different activities and games at the amenity center. From swimming races to basketball shootouts, there’s no shortage of ways to create a day filled with excitement and laughter.

6. Arts and Crafts Day

Get creative with an arts-and-crafts day inspired by the beauty of Crosswinds. Set up a table with art supplies and encourage your kids to paint or draw their favorite parts of the community, such as the trails, wind sculptures, or local wildlife.

You could even organize a family art competition and display everyone’s masterpieces in your living room or backyard for a mini art gallery experience.

7. Cooking Together: Family Picnic Challenge

Turn meal preparation into a fun family activity by hosting a picnic challenge. Each family member can choose a dish to prepare, and you can all work together to create a delicious picnic spread.

Once the food is ready, head to one of Crosswinds’ open green spaces to enjoy your meal outdoors. Don’t forget to pack a blanket and some family-friendly lawn games like cornhole or bocce ball.

8. Neighborhood Photo Safari

If your family enjoys photography, take a “photo safari” around the Crosswinds community. Challenge each family member to capture the best shots of nature, architecture, and community life.

At the end of the day, gather and review everyone’s photos. Print the best ones and create a spring break photo album to remember your staycation adventures.

9. Movie Night Under the Stars

Transform your backyard into an outdoor movie theater with a projector, white sheet, or portable screen. Set up cozy seating with blankets and cushions, and prepare a snack bar with popcorn, candy, and drinks.

Choose a family-friendly movie and enjoy a relaxing evening with your loved ones under the stars. The fresh spring air and the quiet surroundings of Crosswinds make it the perfect setting for an unforgettable movie night.

10. Volunteer as a Family

Drone Company Chooses Kyle, TX for Winter Training Site

To no one’s surprise, the city of Kyle is attracting more and more businesses in 2022. Companies love the favorable regulatory environment in Texas, the weather, the people, the cost of living, and the beautiful, historical towns and cities.

Ranitzo is yet another company that discovered Kyle as the ideal location to conduct business. Ranitzo is an Iowa-based drone developer that’s on the cutting edge of the agricultural drone industry, and they recently chose Kyle Texas’ Public Safety Training Center for their winter training operations.

Rantizo’s agricultural drones are the future of large-scale farming and land management in the U.S. These drones are designed to spray liquid or dry solutions onto crops, such as fertilizers, crop seeds, insects, and more. Because this is a newer concept, the technology is still in its developmental stages. Agriculture drone companies are still in the process of overcoming regulatory, technological, and training obstacles to bring drone tech to the forefront of farming, and moving their training program to Kyle is a great step forward for Rantizo.

The Public Safety Training Center in Kyle is a perfect option for Rantizo. Although the training center is best known for its tactical driving school and drone training for law enforcement, the administration at the training center is looking to land more commercial training programs with the successful launch of Rantizo’s winter training program.

Why Kyle is the perfect location:

There are 3 major reasons that a drone developer like Rantizo chose Kyle.

First, it solves the problem of drone complications with cold weather. Drones don’t like the cold. Cold temperatures reduce chemical activity in the Lipo batteries used in drones, and in extreme cold conditions, drones might shut down mid-flight. Considering that each of Rantizo’s T30 drones retail at over $50,000, that’s something they want to avoid.

Rantizo’s HQ in Iowa has temps that are consistently below zero during winter. Training in those temps is impossible (not to mention unpleasant for trainees and trainers alike). But for a majority of the winter months in Kyle, TX have highs in the 60’s and lows in the 40’s. Drone trainers don’t have to worry about fatal shutdowns or reduced battery life, which increases efficiency and

Second, Kyle, TX already has flight envelopes in place at the training center and clear regulatory guidelines for drone flight. You can’t just fly drones anywhere…the FAA determines what is safe and what isn’t, and they’ve cleared Kyle’s facility for flight training. This solves a big problem for Rantizo.

Third is Kyle itself. The city is located close to two international airports, making it easy for company travel. Plus, it’s a fun city to visit or live in. History of Kyle, TX

In 1880, the town of Kyle was founded by nearby settlers from the communities of Blanco and Mountain City. A man by the name of Fergus Kyle and the family of David Moore donated 200 acres of land for a town site located where the International and Great Northern Railroad connected Austin to San Antonio. The first lots were sold some time in October, which is now why every October we have the Kyle Founders Day Parade!

About the Kyle Founders Day Parade

When: Saturday, October 14
Where: Downtown Kyle
What Time: 10:00 AM

Every year the parade has a theme, and this year the theme is “Bringing It Home To Kyle.” The Kyle Founders Day Parade will start at Gregg-Clarke Park and then head east on Center Street. Once they pass through downtown, they’ll end at the Mary Kyle Hartson City Square Park’s Gazebo. For a good view of the parade as it passes by, your best bet is to simple be on either side of Center Street between the start and end points. At the end of the parade, we will all gather around a birthday cake and sing “Happy Birthday” to our beloved little town.

While there are tons of fun things to do in Kyle, we hope that the Kyle Founders Day Parade is at the top of your list. Come enjoy the spirit of our town, and see why we love calling Kyle home. If you’d like to call this town home too, contact Crosswinds in Kyle, TX to learn about some of the most beautiful new homes near Austin.
