Tech-Free Family Time: Unplugged Activities for Quality Bonding

Technology has worked its way into nearly every facet of our lives, from careers to school and entertainment. Too much screen time, however, can lead to a disconnect among family members.

Thankfully, regularly unplugging to spend time together can help to strengthen family bonds. Here are a few wi-fi-free ways your family can engage in quality bonding.

Family Game Night

Families have been bonding over board games for literally thousands of years. What board games may lack in streaming capability, they can often make up for in challenge and, in some cases, a lot of hilarity.

Board games like Monopoly, Life, Clue, and Trivial Pursuit are always going to be classics, but there are dozens of other board games worth checking out. Ticket to Ride, Hues and Cues, Kids vs. Parents, and Headbanz are all popular board games worth adding to your personal collection.

Give Back

Volunteering doesn’t just help the communities we live in; it helps us as individuals learn to be more empathetic and can benefit our mental health. And because children are constantly watching their parents, volunteering as a family sets a positive example.

When you take time to volunteer with your kids, you’re showing them firsthand the importance of being a good citizen and helping to mold them into a well-rounded person. From helping out at the animal shelter to sorting groceries at the food bank, there are a number of ways to give back in the Kyle area.

Cook and Eat Meals Together

With life seemingly getting busier and busier every year, making time to eat a meal together on a regular basis can be difficult. However, doing so has major benefits in both the short and long term. For starters, it gives family members a chance to reconnect at the end of the day and just talk. In fact, “80% of teenagers say that family dinner is the time of the day they’re most likely to talk to their parents,” according to a Harvard study

Why not take things a step further? Break out a cookbook and include the entire family in preparing the meal, assigning each family member a task. Research shows that families who regularly eat dinner together are at lower risk of depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and teen pregnancy.

Head Outside

We’re lucky enough to live in one of the most beautiful areas of the country, and there are nearly endless ways to enjoy it.

Kyle has several parks within a 15-minute drive that are ideal for hiking, tossing the frisbee, or viewing wildlife. And in warmer months, setting out to explore a natural swimming hole is going to beat staying inside and playing video games hands down every time.

Maybe you’re looking for something even more adventurous? Texas Trail Rides offers group horse rides, and the City of Kyle website has a bike map for families looking to keep things on two wheels rather than four legs.

Even something as simple as taking a family walk around one of the trails within the Crosswinds community can be beneficial. To learn more about Crosswinds, contact us today.

Fall Fitness

Adding exercise to your routine has incredible benefits. It reduces risks for various health issues. It makes us feel better. It maintains weight and helps to boost energy.

Of course, the Texas summer heat can really zap energy fast, and the winter weather can limit the number of outdoor exercise activities. Fall, on the other hand, is nearly perfect for making the most of getting some exercise outdoors (and indoors on those rainy days).

If you’re looking to build a fitness routine or reinvigorate your current routine, here are some ideas to make the most of fall fitness.

Try a New Class

There’s no shortage of classes and gyms in Kyle and the greater Austin area. If you’re burnt out on your current fitness routine, try something new. Live Well Fitness offers an indoor/outdoor boot camp through the city’s website with a little bit of everything. Participants can expect to spend time running/power walking, weight training, traversing obstacle courses, and working on core training, as well as pilates-like and yoga-like exercises.

Looking for something a bit more off the beaten path? Consider checking out the Crux Climbing Center. The climbing gym has two Austin locations and offers both classes and private lessons for interested climbers.

Dojo Kyle is another great alternative for anyone looking for a new and challenging way to get in shape. The martial arts studio offers programs for both kids and adults, and the first round of classes is free.

Make the Most of Community Amenities

If you live in the Crosswinds community, you have trails practically right in your backyard. This trail system of both crushed granite and paved walking/biking trails weaves through the master-planned community, allowing residents to get in some exercise without having to ever leave the neighborhood.

Residents also enjoy making the most of our amenities during the fall months when the Texas heat has finally died down. It’s not unusual to see people playing a game of one-on-one or doubles on our basketball and tennis courts or using our open play fields by kicking around a soccer ball or tossing a frisbee.

Set Year-End Goals

People tend to look at setting fitness goals as something to be done at the beginning of the year. While there’s no wrong time to start your fitness journey, and joining a gym in the new year is great, why wait until a new calendar year?

Embracing a fall fitness routine sets you on the path to ending the year feeling good about yourself, and you’ll already have a head start once January first rolls around. Plus, the fall weather is hands down always going to beat winter weather when it comes to exercise!

There are plenty of ways to get and stay in shape in Kyle this fall. If you’d like to learn more about finding a home in the Crosswinds community, contact us today.

Mindfulness + Relaxation

Stress isn’t always a bad thing, but too much stress can hurt a person’s well-being, and according to the American Psychological Association, we’re more stressed than ever. Here are a few things you can do to help with relaxation and mindfulness.

Pick Up a Pen – Journaling is one of the oldest known ways to cope with life’s ups and downs. People have been picking up a pen to jot down their setbacks, frustrations, and triumphs for centuries, and it’s been shown to help with everything from managing depression to identifying negative behaviors and emotional triggers.

Change Your Diet -. Not only is eating because you’re stressed harmful, but eating too many of the wrong kinds of food can take its toll on the body and mind.

Too much alcohol, caffeine, sugar, or processed foods can put a strain on the body. However, foods rich in antioxidants, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamins found in fruits, veggies, and nuts can help the body better manage daily stress.

Make Some R&R Time – Most of us are busier than ever, but it’s still incredibly important that we make time for ourselves and social time to spend with others. This could be hitting up the batting cages, putting on some headphones and listening to your favorite music, or catching up with a friend over a cup of coffee.

Try to set aside at least 30 minutes a day for yourself on a regular basis.

Meditation – People have been using meditation to boost their mental health for thousands of years. In practice, meditation is paying attention to your breath as it goes in and out and taking notice when the mind wanders from this task. It’s been shown to not only help with lowering stress but improving focus as well.

Start off slow, finding a quiet place and meditating for a couple of minutes at a time.

Try a New Hobby – Picking up a new hobby is a great way to not only improve your focus and give your brain a workout but ward off stress as well. While some hobbies are going to be more relaxing than others (putting together a jigsaw puzzle vs. CrossFit), there’s an endless array to choose from.

Volunteer – Volunteering is not only a great way to give back to your community but has a benefit to the volunteer as well. According to Susan Albers, PsyD, a psychologist for Cleveland Clinic, “[Volunteering] has been shown to decrease stress levels, depression, anxiety and boost your overall health and satisfaction with life.”

From animal shelters to serving the needy, there are plenty of opportunities in Kyle to volunteer your time.

Get More Exercise and Sleep – Two of the best ways to give your mental health a boost are exercise and a good night’s sleep. How much sleep a person needs can vary, but most people tend to need 6 to 9 hours.

Whether it’s lifting weights at the gym, taking a dance class, or simply going for a stroll on a walking trail, regular exercise helps to reduce stress and increases mood-boosting dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain.

From the pool to the extensive trail system, the Crosswinds community has an array of amenities designed to help residents relax and enjoy life to the fullest. Contact our team to learn more about finding a home here.

Daytrip to New Braunfels

If you’re looking for a day trip that promises plenty to do and is no more than half an hour’s drive, set your sights on New Braunfels. Jump on the I-35 and head south to discover natural wonders, mammoth water slides, and world-class cuisine.

Float the River – If your idea of a perfect summer day involves letting your cares drift away as you float down a river, then be sure to check out Rockin R River Rides. The outfitter offers tube and kayak trips on the Comal and Guadalupe rivers. Tubs and kayaks are provided, as well as drop off and pick up after your float is done. There’s even a bar and food truck on-site for post-float refreshments.

Cool Off on a Wild Slide – If floating down the river is a little too tame or you simply prefer a man-made lazy river float, be sure to check out Schlitterbahn Waterpark. It’s the largest waterpark in Texas and boasts 51 attractions, from relaxing wave pools to heart-pumping near-gravity-defying slides. Day passes start at just $49, and should you need repeat rides on Dragon’s Revenge, season passes are available.

Hit Up Downtown – With its many unique shops, quaint cafes, and inventive restaurants, Downtown New Braunfels is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. Stop by stores such as Dancing Pony Boutique, Got Toys?, or Arlan’s Market for unique gifts and locally made crafts. After a bit of shopping, pull up a chair at Myron’s Steakhouse, Union Street Station, or one Downtown New Braunfels, among many other restaurants.

Rock Out – A visit to Austin or San Antonio isn’t necessary to catch a great concert. Since 2007, the Whitewater Amphitheater has been welcoming music’s biggest legends and rising new stars. With a capacity of 5,600, the amphitheater has seen everyone from ZZ Top to Eric Church and Midland take the stage.

Mellow Out – Sometimes, a day trip calls not for excitement but sheer bliss and relaxation. If that’s what you’re seeking with a visit to New Braunfels, be sure to book an appointment at Retreat Day Spa. For over 30 years, the spa has been offering facial, body, hair, and nail treatments, all in a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.

Grab a Drink – There are plenty of breweries and wineries to check out in the Texas Hill Country, and New Braunfels is home to two standouts. Five Stones Brewery offers a range of brews in addition to coffee and food options, as well as special events on select weekends. Be sure to stop by Dry Comal Creek Vineyards as well to sample wines in the tasting room or pick up a bottle to bring home with you.

Explore a Natural Wonder Natural Bridge Caverns is a New Braunfels highlight that is not to be missed! A tour of the caverns is the ideal way to escape the Texas heat, as the temperature inside the cave is 70 degrees year-round. In addition to cave tours, kids can mine for gems and fossils or scale the Twisted Trails ropes course. There are also special events, such as yoga and concerts, that take place inside the caverns.

With close proximity to New Braunfels, Austin, and San Antonio, Kyle is central to much of the Texas Hill Country. If you’d like to find a home here, contact the Crosswinds team to learn more about our available inventory of homes.

Outdoor Fun in Kyle

From nature trails to geocaching tours and even polo matches, Kyle has plenty of ways to have some outdoor fun.

Lake Kyle – The closest beach to Kyle (and by “beach,” we mean the kind with salt water) is Lighthouse Beach, near Port Lavaca, some 137 miles away. That’s not terrible, but it’s a bit far for an afternoon outing. However, plenty of fun by the water can be had locally on Lake Kyle’s

shores.

The lake is open from sunrise to sunset for residents and visitors alike to enjoy. This city park has plenty to do, including trails along the water, a playground, a boat ramp, and a pier for catch-and-release fishing.

Steeplechase Dog Park – If you’re a dog owner, there’s a good chance that your puppy is itching to come along with you every time you leave the house. Obviously, that’s not always possible, but when a car ride is doable, there’s no better destination than the dog park at Steeplechase

The dog park was opened in 2018 and was instantly a hit with Kyle’s four-legged residents. The park includes separate areas for both small and large dogs and a watering station for pups to get a little refreshment. In addition to having plenty of space for dogs to run, there are also volleyball, soccer, and baseball fields for their humans to enjoy.

Waterleaf Park – Located on the eastern side of the city is Waterleaf Park. The local park covers 92 acres, though only around 20 of those acres are currently developed.

Among the park’s developed areas for guests to enjoy are a playscape, ball fields, and a trailhead that runs through the park.

Plum Creek Trail – Lake Kyle, Steeplechase, and Waterleaf share a common thread, as all of these parks are connected by one excellent trail. Named after the creek it runs alongside it, the Plum Creek Trail is currently 7 miles of walkable and bikeable trail that, when finished, will stretch from the eastern part of Kyle to the western section of the city.

When finished, the trail will be over 15 miles long, but in the meantime, the popular walkway connects the city to nature in a way that everyone can enjoy.

Geocaching tour – Geocaching is one of the coolest ways to explore a city and involves using your phone or tablet to follow GPS coordinates to track down a geocache container. It’s sorta like a modern version of a treasure hunt, and the Kyle Chamber of Commerce has a geocaching passport where participants can find prizes all over the city.

Country Line Polo Club – If you’re looking for some outdoor fun a bit off the beaten path, Kyle’s Country Line Polo Club could be right up your alley. Polo is traditionally associated with British royals but has found its way to Texas, and games happen every Friday night!

Watching a match is a lot of fun for adults and kids of all ages, and if your little ones are interested in learning to ride, there are instructors available.

These are just a few of the incredible ways to enjoy some outdoor fun in Kyle. If you’d like to learn more about this wonderful city and find a home here, contact the Crosswinds team today.

Ways to Beat the Heat – Without Spending on AC

We’re smack dab in the middle of summer, which undoubtedly means that it’s incredibly hot out. With Texas dealing with a record-breaking heat wave, keeping cool in your home can be a serious challenge.

Here are a few helpful strategies to help you beat the beat without pushing your HVAC into the red.

Keep Air Moving

Fans are your friend in the summer. Whether you have a ceiling fan or a stationary floor fan, keeping the air in the room circulating will help to move out hot air.

If you have a ceiling fan, be sure it is spinning in the correct direction. You want it spinning counterclockwise during hotter months, as this can help to make you feel up to 4 degrees cooler. If you happen to be using a window box fan, set it to blow inwards from the window when it’s cooler out at night, and set it to blow outwards during sunny hours to ward off heat.

And for an extra blast of cold air, try putting a container of ice cubes in front of the fan to disperse cooler air.

Cover Windows

It can be tempting to open all your windows in the middle of the day with the hopes that a cool breeze will pass through. It’s much more likely, however, that you’ll just be allowing the hot air from outside to flow in and heat your home up even more.

In the middle of the day, it’s recommended that you keep windows closed and have them covered with dark curtains to help block out sunlight. Wait until the sun sets and temperatures cool off if you want to open your windows up for some fresh air.

Ovens Off

Grilling out isn’t just a fun summer activity; it’s a great way to keep your home cooler because you won’t be using your stove or oven. Cooking generates a lot of heat, and depending on how much cooking you’re doing, stoves and ovens can have an impact on the overall temperature of your kitchen.

If you do decide to use your oven or stove, turn on the exhaust fan to help move out the hot air.

Keep Doors Closed

Remember when you would leave the front door open as a kid, and your dad would say, “We’re not trying to air condition the entire neighborhood!”? Well, the same can be applied to the inside of your home as well.

Keep doors closed to rooms that aren’t in use. This will help trap the cold air in those spaces that are being used and keep the hot air isolated to other rooms in the house.

Drink More Water

Drinking more water on hot days isn’t just a necessary precaution to help avoid heat stroke, but it will help to keep you more comfortable. For an extra cooling boost with the powers of H2O, use ice packs or cold compresses on your neck, wrists, or other pulse points for quick relief.

And when staying in your home simply feels too unbearable, and you need a serious cool down, there’s nothing better than a refreshing dip in the pool! To learn more about the amenities offered in the Crosswinds community and find a home here, contact us today.

July Events For Younger Kids In Kyle

Between summer camps, sports, and trips to the pool, there are plenty of fun activities for kids and teens during the summer months. But what about those children who are pre-K and under and may not be big enough to tag along with their older siblings?

Thankfully, there’s still plenty of fun to be had this summer! Check out these local happenings at the Kyle Public Library that are geared toward the littlest members of the family.

Sensory Storytime – Mondays at 10 AM. This program is recommended for children between the ages of 2 and 5. Incorporating active sensory play and music, the program is open to all toddlers and is great for children who may have special sensory challenges or developmental delays.

Lil Yogis – Tuesdays 10:30 AM. Part yoga, part storytime (okay, mostly storytime), Lil Yogis is a half-hour dedicated to reading, along with some active play through yoga poses to go along with the featured book.

Pajama Storytime – Tuesdays at 7 PM. Head back to the Library after Lil Yogis for more reading, but don’t forget to wear your pajamas. Aimed at children 6 and below, this half-hour of fun will include stories and songs. It’s the perfect way to wind down after a fun summer day before heading off to bed.

Preschool storytime – Wednesdays 10:30 AM. This reading session is all about preschoolers. Designed for children ages 2 to 5, parents are invited to bring their children to the library for a storytime session that is aimed at helping to foster a love of reading and active learning through songs, finger plays, and other activities.

Baby lap-sit – Thursdays at 10 AM. It’s never too early to introduce your children to reading, and this event is all about babies. Geared towards children 0 to 18 months old, parents (or grandparents) will be invited to sit with their children for an hour of nursery rhymes, songs, reading, and maybe even a little bit of active play tossed in for good measure.

Toddler Time – Thursdays at 11 AM. If you have an older toddler in tow, hang around after Baby lap-sit because this program keeps the reading train chugging along in the next hour. Recommended for children 18-26 months old, children will be presented with both new and classic stories that encourage reading and language skills through songs, felt boards, and other activities.

¡Los Cuentos! Bilingual storytime – Fridays 10:30 AM. Designed for young children ages 0 to 5 years of age, this program will present stories in both English and Spanish. There will also be songs, finger plays, and other activities to go along with the stories and help stimulate children’s early language skills.

These are just a few of the many events happening each week at the Kyle Public Library. The local library has something for everyone, with a range of free events, classes, and resources.

Summer Activities Other Than Swimming + Playing Outside

Swing by the Crosswinds community pool on a sunny day in the summer, and you’re bound to see people taking a dip. Whether at the pool, beach, or lake – swimming is pretty much essential for summer survival in Texas.

That doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t plenty of ways to make the most of the great outdoors in the summer months. Consider leaving the bathing suit at home and adding these outdoor activities to your summer bucket list.

Climb a Rock

Climbers from around the country come to this part of Texas to refine their skills on the area’s limestone rock faces. If you’re looking for a summer workout, climbing will definitely put your muscles to the test.

Enchanted Rock State Natural Area and Reimer’s Ranch Park are two popular spots because of the diversity of climbing trails available. If you’re new to the sport or just want to work on your skills, consider signing up for a class or private lesson at Cruck Climbing Center in Austin. You’ll be able to perfect your technique under the guidance of seasoned climbing vets so that when you do tackle that 70-foot rock wall, you’re primed and ready.

Catch a Fish

Scaling a 100-foot cliff can certainly help take your mind off the hustle and bustle of modern life, but if you’re looking for something a bit less extreme, fishing can do the trick too. Fishing is an ideal summer activity for families, and whether you plan to keep and eat your catch or toss it back, there’s no shortage of great places in the area to cast a line.

Grab your tackle box and check out these fishing spots near Kyle:

  • Red Bud Isle
  • Lockhart State Park
  • McKinney Falls State Park
  • Lake Travis
  • Rebecca Creek
  • Onion Creek

Geocaching

If you’re unfamiliar with geocaching, it’s sort of along the lines of a treasure hunt using GPS. Individuals and organizations set up caches around a certain area and share the locations of these caches on the internet.

Participants then use the GPS capability on their phones or tablet to locate the coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a reward. There are essentially three rules for a fun round of geocaching:

  1. Take something from the cache
  2. Leave something in the cache
  3. Write about it in the logbook

Popular items to leave in the geocache for the next person include buttons, keychains, small toys, coins, or something unique to the area. Geocaching is a super fun way to explore Kyle, and you can even pick up a passport through the city to go on a Kyle GeoTour.

Catch a Game

The roar of the crowd, the smell of popcorn… there’s nothing quite like catching a baseball game in the summer. Kyle residents are lucky enough to have two teams in the area that they can cheer on. The Round Rock Express is a Triple-A team that plays at Dell Diamond Stadium in Round Rock, and the Austin Weirdos, a Pecos League team that takes the field at Govalle Park in Austin.

Whether you’re a Weirdos or Round Rock fan, a day at the ballpark is always a summer favorite.

With so much to do in the Kyle area during the summer, the question isn’t what should you do, but what should you do next? If you’re looking to explore all Kyle has to offer, check out the inventory of new homes in Crosswinds or contact the Crosswinds team.

Kyle Summer Camps

There’s a good chance that if you have school-aged children, they’re literally counting the days until that final school bell of the year rings and summer vacation starts. The last day of school for students in the Hays CISD is May 25, and schools don’t start back up until the middle of August. That’s a lot of downtime to fill!

If you’re looking for something to keep the kiddos occupied for the summer that doesn’t involve a screen, summer camp is the way to go. The City of Kyle’s Summer Camp program is a way for children to stay active and have a whole lot of fun in the process. Here’s everything you need to know.

Dates and Registration

Kyle’s Summer Camp program runs from May 30 through July 28, with a break in the middle for the July 4 holiday. That’s eight weeks of adult-supervised recreational indoor and outdoor fun, field trips, and new friendships being made.

The day camp’s Voyager program is available for children who have completed Kindergarten through those entering 5th grade, while the older Adventure program is designed for students in 6th through 9th grade.

Camp times for both camps run from 7:45 AM to 5:45 PM Monday through Friday, with camp taking place at Wallace Middle School.

There is limited capacity for both camps, so it’s advised that parents register their children for a spot as soon as possible. Camp is $150 per week, and this fee covers a t-shirt, daily snacks, and all camp activities. The camp doesn’t supply breakfast or lunch, so children must bring a lunch and a water bottle.

What Campers Can Expect

Kids won’t find a couch or an Xbox at summer camp; instead, they will discover some truly awesome activities designed to keep them active and mentally engaged and help develop new skills. We’re talking fishing, archery, bowling, soccer, swimming, crafts, and various other fun activities.

Campers will also be taking the fun on the road with weekly field trips to places such as Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio, ZDT Amusement Park in Seguin, and Animal World & Snake Farm in New Braunfels!

With daily activities and weekly field trips, Kyle’s Summer Camp program is not only a no-brainer for parents who have to work during the summer but also a fun alternative for kids who otherwise might be stuck at home in front of the television.

Parents can learn more about the ins and outs of camp, what to bring, what not to bring, and more in the 2023 Summer Camp guide

The city’s summer camp is just one of the many aspects of Kyle that make it such a great city to live in. If you’re interested in finding a home in Kyle, reach out to learn more about available homes at Crosswinds. This master-planned community offers a variety of resort-style amenities and houses from the state’s top builders.

National Museum Day: Museums to visit near Kyle

Texas is fortunate to have over 1,000 museums open to the public. National Museum Day is May 18, and there are some fantastic museums right here in Central Texas. From the presidential to the downright weird, here are seven museums near Kyle that you should check out.

Blanton Museum of Art: Since 1963, this art museum housed on the UT campus has attracted art lovers from around the state and the world. The museum boasts more than 21,000 works in its collection, spanning a range of artistic mediums and eras. If you love spending an afternoon simply wandering around and getting lost in a museum, the Blanton Museum of Art should be at the top of your list.

Calaboose African American History Museum: Located about 15 minutes from Kyle in San Marcos, this small museum is housed in Hays County’s first jail – a building that dates back all the way to 1873. The museum’s collection includes over 500 items centered around the African American experience. Entry to the museum is free of charge, but it is only open on Saturdays from 10 AM to 3 PM or by appointment, so plan accordingly.

Memorial Mini Golf and Museum: Part mini golf course, part military museum (you read that right), this Buda golf course/museum aims to provide some fun for visitors and honor the U.S. men and women who served in World War II. With both indoor and outdoor mini golf courses to play, it promises some competitive fun paired with a little bit of military history along the way.

LBJ Museum: The Lyndon Baines Johnson Museum of San Marcos commemorates our nation’s 36th president and the role Texas played in molding him to become one of the 20th century’s most regarded leaders. Exhibits include presidential memorabilia, early photographs, local news clippings, and materials from LBJ’s years as a student at Southwest Texas State Teachers College and his time as a teacher in the state before moving into the White House.

McKenna Children’s Museum: Located in New Braunfels, this local children’s museum is all about providing a fun and educational atmosphere that encourages kids to see, touch, and smell the exhibits. With an environment that allows a child’s imagination to run wild, this is one museum where parents will never have to worry about their kiddos uttering that dreaded phrase, “I’m bored.”

Museum of Ice Cream: The honor of the “most delicious museum” on our list goes to this Austin museum that promises to help visitors “rediscover” their inner child through the “universal power of ice cream.” It’s not so much a museum dedicated to the history of the frozen treat as it is a space designed for Instagram-worthy photoshoots (think giant tubs of plastic sprinkles). But yes – you do get to eat actual ice cream!

Museum of the Weird: Inspired by the capital city’s “keep Austin weird” slogan, this kooky museum houses all sorts of unusual attractions and curiosities. Once visitors pay the $13 admission, they’ll be welcomed inside to view shrunken heads, the Fiji mermaid, and other “freaks of nature.”

Whether you’re looking to entertain the kids, learn about Texas state history, or simply want to broaden your appreciation for art, there’s a museum in the Kyle area for just about everyone.

To learn more about Kyle and find your home here, reach out to the Crosswinds team.
