5 Home Design Trends to Watch for 2020

With 2020 only a few months away, this is a good time to explore home design trends for inspiration. If you’re browsing new homes in Kyle, you can take these to your home builder. They typically have designers on their team who can turn your ideas for each room into reality.

The interior design trends of 2020 are all about character, personality, and nature. Check out these five 2020 home design trends you will want to consider.

  1. Minimalism

Less is more especially for those who love a clean and calming environment. Although it tends to have less in a room, minimalism can pack a punch and look beautiful. Furniture containing geometrically-clean shapes and lines provide a touch of elegance. Think Scandinavian style.

  1. Blues

Footwear News reports that Laurie Pressman, VP of Pantone Color Institute, PANTONE’s Color of the Year gets its inspiration from the sea. Products are reflecting the colors of nature including florals and raw earth. However, the sea will be the biggest source of creativity.

Naval color

And confirming blue is going to be hot for 2020 is Sherwin Williams. They have selected Naval SW 6244 as their 2020 Color of the Year. This shade of blue feels calming yet strong. Complementary colors include lighter shades of gold, taupe, and green.

  1. Sustainability

An engineered environment echoes the earth trend. What this means is that designers are using science to find ways to create something that is long-lasting. For example, Ecobird’s line of children’s furniture is made of recycled plastics from discarded children’s toys.

Another growing trend is the use of terrazzo, a composite material with a seamless finish containing flecks of marble, quartz, granite, or glass. It’s been around since the 1920s as it appears widely in art deco. Adding terrazzo in your home will give it a retro-glam look.

  1. Natural Materials

The natural colors of wood continue to be a winner. One of the trends of 2020 is the use of darker wood like chocolate and cinnamon as well as natural cork, which works well on walls and doors. Enhance the spaciousness, warmth, and comfort by playing with the lighting. Wood tends to pop with bright lighting from ceiling lights and spotlights.

  1. Ethnic Elements

Considering the diversity of our world, you have many possibilities in playing with ethnic elements in your space. Maybe you’ve picked up wall hangings on your international travels or browse international-focused shops that offer accents, furniture, and other unique elements to enrich the space.

Changing up the look and feel of a room doesn’t require a complete makeover. Just add an accent or two, a new piece of furniture, or fresh coat of paint can invigorate the space. You can even use contrasting colors, which will create a unique vibe. Ask the Kyle builders about implementing these design ideas in your new home.

Austin City Limits Music Festival

One of the coolest things about living in a community in Kyle, Texas, is that you’re only 30 minutes away from one of the most awesome music festivals in the country: Austin City Limits Music Festival that takes place every year in Austin’s Zilker Park. More than 225,000 fans attend and have a choice of a lineup with more than 100 performers. It occurs over two weekends in October.

About the ACL Music Festival

This year’s festival is Oct. 4 – 6 and Oct. 11 – 13. Attendees can savor an array of acts across eight stages. This year’s ACL lineup includes Guns N’ Roses, Cardi B, Mumford and Sons, Kacey Musgraves, and many more. Just make sure you’re not Still Woozy or else you may fall Asleep at the Wheel. That’s our cheesy way of working in two more bands.

Here are the interactive Weekend One Schedule and Weekend Two Schedule. You can use MyFest to create favorites, compare with friends, and get more features for managing your schedule. You can also download the schedules as a PDF file.

While there are lodging options, Kyle residents can save on lodging by driving there. Use the money you save toward ACL Eats! Austin is known for is food, so count on delicious local bites that include vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. Looking at the food lineup is causing some loud stomach rumblings as we write this.

When you want to take a break from music, you can explore other areas of the park that will relax and recharge you. And yes, the little ones aged 10 and under get in Austin Kiddie Limits free with their parents. ACL has thought of everything as there’s a separate entrance to the kid-friendly area and it has stroller-friendly lanes at the main gates.

Preparing to Attend the ACL Music Festival

We strongly recommend you read the festival frequently asked questions. It has all the answers and tips you need. The most important thing is to come prepared based on these ACL safety tips. For example, the festival has hydration water refill stations. You can refill your empty water bottle (be sure to bring it!) at these cool, filtered water and cooling stations located all around the venue.

Bring and apply sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen often. Did we say sunscreen? Protect those ears with earplugs. The music gets LOUD. The festival also has a bag policy, so check that out and do review the allowed and prohibited items list. It has certain types of jewelry on the list and innocent things like frisbees. They probably don’t want someone to get bonked on the head.

Many Kyle residents attend ACL every year. That’s one of the best parts about living in this town. They enjoy a quieter lifestyle without the hubbub of a city Yet, they’re close enough to Austin to drive to the music festival without needing to find lodging. Not here yet but want to be? Check out the new homes in Kyle.

Keep It Kyle: Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center

When you visit or live in Kyle, Texas, you must stop by the Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center. Here’s a little bit about its namesake and what you can expect to see there.

Who Was Katherine Anne Porter?

Callie Russell Porter was a writer, journalist, actress, and political activist born in 1890, just 10 years after the birth of the city of Kyle. Porter’s paternal grandmother Catherine Ann Porter built a three-room house on Center Street.

After Porter’s mother died in 1892, her father moved his four surviving children into his mother’s home in Kyle. The family lived there until her grandmother’s death in 1902. To honor her grandmother, Porter changed her name to Katherine Anne Porter.

Porter won the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize for The Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter, a collection of short and long stories. That’s why she’s one of Kyle’s most famous residents.

About the Literary Center

In 1997, the Austin Community Foundation, the Lower Colorado River Authority, the Clayton Fund, and the Burdine Johnson Foundation purchased the home. Bill Johnson and the Burdine Johnson Foundation funded the renovation and completed the restoration by 2000.

The house earned a National Literary Landmark designation in 2002. Four years later, the house landed on the National Register of Historic Places.

As part of a cooperative project between Texas State and the Hays County Preservation Associates, Texas State University leases the house as an extension of its nationally recognized MFA program in creative writing. The university hosts master classes with writers-in-residence that can include readings and book signings. Check the events calendar for the schedule.

Learn More and Visit the Literary Center

The center records all readings, which people can access at Porter House Review (formerly Front Porch Journal), Texas State’s MFA Program’s online literary magazine. Texas State’s Hillviews Magazine delves deeper into the center’s story.

The Katherine Anne Porter Literary Center (508 Center St., Kyle, TX 78640) is open to visitors and school groups by appointment. To schedule a visit, email kapliterarycenter@gmail.com or call 512-268-6637.

Home Maintenance: Just the Basics You Need to Know

The best thing about buying a new home in Kyle’s Crosswinds Community is that everything works and runs smoothly. You don’t have to wonder if the house started having problems under a previous owner. It’s a clean slate.

The joy of homeownership also requires doing basic home maintenance tasks. Spending a few minutes doing these tasks and learning the basics will stave off bigger, more expensive problems in the long-run. It also extends the life of your home and keeps utility bills as low as possible.

Here are the most important basics to know that will help your new home last for decades to come.

Electricity

The first thing to find is your circuit-breaker box and switches. It’s typically in the garage. Check the switches to see if they have labels showing you which controls what part of the house. If there are no labels, ask your home builder.

Knowing where the breaker box is and which switch to … well … switch comes in handy when the power goes out in one area of your home. It’s actually a good thing the power went off because something tripped the switch. The power turning off is a safety measure to prevent potential problems. Most of the time, flipping the switch fixes the problem.

You may notice outlets in the kitchen and bathroom that features red and black buttons. The black button is a test button. It deactivates the outlet. The red is the reset button.

Say you’re using the hairdryer and it suddenly stops working. You won’t need to go to the circuit-breaker box to fix this. Just press the red (reset) button and the hairdryer should work again.

Water

Just like you want to know the location of your circuit-breaker box and switches, you also want to locate your water valves in case you ever have to shut off the water. Typically, you can find valves under the sink or behind appliances. Or follow the hose to the valve.

This one tip will save you loads of money and headaches. When you spot a leak or a flood, turn the valve to the right (clockwise) to shut it off. The sooner you do it, the less water will get out and do damage.

After shutting off the water, drain the residual water where the valve feeds. Go about doing the repairs. As soon as you finish and verify everything works, turn the valve to the left (counter-clockwise) to restore the water supply. Open the faucet associated with the valve to let out any air.

Air

For new homes in Kyle, you’ll want to replace the air filter more frequently in the beginning. Things like drywall dust take time to settle. Right after moving in, change the filters every two weeks for a few months. Then, you can switch to replacing the filters every three months.

It makes a huge difference in the utility bill. The more filled the filter is, the harder your air conditioning unit will work and drive up the cost.

Toilets

You don’t need to have every tool under the sun as soon as you move into your new home. It’s fine to keep adding to your collection over time.

These are the first tools you want to have on hand:

  • Plunger
  • Auger
  • Bucket
  • Rubber gloves

It’s not a matter if, but a matter of when a clogged toilet will happen. And the plunger will do the trick most of the time. Sometimes the situation requires something stronger and that’s where the auger will come to the rescue.

Before you plunge, evaluate the water to determine its chances of overflowing. If it looks likely, turn off the valve near the toilet. Grab the plunger for this. Remove half of the water from the toilet, make a tight seal with the plunger, and plunge several times. If the water goes down, give it one more plunge. Turn on the valve and flush the toilet.

Still backed up? Time to bring in the auger. Insert it into the toilet and slowly crank it to the right (clockwise) until it’s tight. Turn the crank in reverse (counter-clockwise) for a little bit and then crank forward as far as you can. All good? Now, crank in reverse while pulling backward. This should solve the problem. Test it by flushing the toilet several times.

Bonus Home Maintenance Tip

Nowadays, you can download most manuals from the internet. This is the time to look up all your appliances and pick up the manuals for each. Store them together in a folder on your hard drive.

You may have some print manuals. Store them in one place where you know you will find them. These manuals prove useful when you run into a problem or need to replace a part. They let you know exactly what part you need to order.

If you encounter a problem not covered here, just do a search for home maintenance solutions and videos. You’ll find a how-to video for almost everything. Also, open your phone’s app store and search for home maintenance apps. Many nifty checklists and references are available to help you with home maintenance.

Now that you know where everything is located and bought the tools, treat yourself! Or maybe you’re thinking about looking at new homes in Kyle? Come explore the Crosswinds Community with its diversity of amenities.
